The Difference between Miniature Motors and Industrial Servos

Time:2025-09-03

In some product applications of micro motors, if parameters such as low rotational speed and high torque are required, a gear reduction motor will be needed. Gear reduction motors have structures such as planetary reducers. A servo motor can also achieve a speed reduction effect. So, both micro reduction motors and servo motors are speed reduction transmission devices. Why not just use a reduction motor? [Sensitive word] will explain to you the differences between micro reduction motors and industrial servo motors.

A micro DC motor, that is, a gear reduction motor, is a DC motor equipped with a gear reduction box. Its main function is to reduce the output rotational speed of the micro motor through various gears and increase the torque. The lower the rotational speed, the greater the torque. The more gear sets there are, the slower the rotational speed. Theoretically, without considering losses, the torque can be increased indefinitely by adding gears without limit. Unlike servo motors, a micro DC motor doesn't have other functions. Its main function is to reduce the rotational speed and increase the torque.

DC reduction motors are relatively common motors that can be applied to various products, such as common electronic locks, printers, etc., which all use them.

Industrial servo motor

First of all, an industrial servo motor has a structure consisting of a micro motor + large and small gears + a micro motor controller + a potentiometer. It is a servo unit installed in a "box" as a whole and can accurately rotate a given angle using a simple input signal. In the servo motor, there is a potentiometer or angle sensor to detect the rotation angle of the output shaft. Then the control board will control and adjust the angle of the output shaft according to the information of the potentiometer, forming a closed-loop control system. Industrial servo motors are also called servo systems. Generally, micro DC motors such as N20/N30/030 and other models are used. There are also those using brushless DC motors, depending on the application parameters. Of course, industrial servo motors using brushless DC motors have a longer lifespan.

Industrial servo motors used in model aircraft need to be fast, highly accurate, have relatively high torque, and have waterproof performance. Common industrial servo motor gears are generally metal or plastic gears. If metal gears are used, the price will be relatively high, but the torque will be greater and the lifespan will be relatively long.

The working principle of a servo motor is that the control circuit receives the control signal from the signal source to drive the micro DC motor to operate. The gear set reduces the rotational speed of the DC motor and increases the output torque (this is the same as a micro reduction motor). The main work of the potentiometer is to rotate together with the final gear set to measure the rotation angle of the servo motor shaft. The circuit board detects the rotation angle according to the potentiometer, and finally controls the industrial servo motor to rotate to the set angle or maintain the target angle.
